The HSK: a complete guide
The HSK is the official Chinese proficiency test for people whose first language is not Chinese. It is used for university admission and scholarships in China, for jobs, and by learners who want a clear goal. This guide covers how the test works now that the new HSK starts on 13 December 2026.
Who runs the HSK
The HSK is run by Chinese Testing International (CTI) on behalf of China’s Center for Language Education and Cooperation. You register through CTI’s website, chinesetest.cn, and take the test at an approved test centre, often a university or language school. Many cities have several test dates a year.
The nine levels
The new HSK has three stages. Each level tests the words, characters and grammar of the levels below it as well as its own.

What the test looks like
Every level has listening and reading. Writing starts at HSK 2, and HSK 3–6 each have a separate speaking test. HSK 7–9 adds translation. Questions are mostly multiple choice or matching; writing tasks range from filling in a single character at HSK 2 to a 300-character argument essay at HSK 6.
You can usually choose between a paper-based test and a computer-based test at a centre. The questions are the same kind; on the computer test you type your writing answers. CTI has an online demo of the computer-based test.
Dates and registration
CTI publishes a calendar each year; in 2026 there were eleven HSK 1–6 dates. Registration usually closes about four weeks before a paper-based test and about ten days before a computer-based one. See HSK test dates and the step-by-step registration guide.
Scores and results
Results for the computer-based test come out about two weeks after the test, and for the paper-based test about a month after. CTI has not yet published the score scale and pass marks for the new HSK 1–6. See HSK scores and results for what is known, including how the old scoring worked.
On the day
Bring your printed admission ticket and the same ID you registered with, and arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals miss the listening section. Our test day checklist covers what to bring and the rules in the room.

Questions
What does HSK stand for? +
Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (汉语水平考试), now officially called the Chinese Proficiency Test in English (中文水平考试). It is run by Chinese Testing International (CTI).
How many HSK levels are there? +
From 13 December 2026, nine levels in three stages: HSK 1–3 (elementary), HSK 4–6 (intermediate) and HSK 7–9 (advanced). Levels 1–6 are separate tests; 7–9 share one test.
How much does the HSK cost? +
Fees are set by each test centre and country, so check the centre’s page when you register. In mainland China, fees have increased with the level.
Can I take the HSK online at home? +
CTI lists an at-home internet test option for some tests and regions. Most candidates take the test at a centre, on paper or on a computer. The options shown when you register depend on your country and centre.
How long are HSK scores valid? +
CTI describes HSK score reports as valid for two years from the test date for applications. Schools and employers can set their own rules.
Which HSK level do I need for university in China? +
It depends on the school and programme. Chinese-taught undergraduate degrees have often asked for HSK 4, and some programmes ask for HSK 5 or 6. Check the school’s current admissions notice, since some are updating requirements for the new HSK.
