What you can do at this level
Operate in complex academic, professional, and formal cultural settings. The syllabus also expects translation and interpretation skills that the classic HSK 1–6 papers do not.
Exam structure (classic written paper)
Times and item counts below are the widely published HSK 2.0 written format. Confirm against your registration. Do not apply the 60% pass-mark story to HSK 7–9. CTI describes an ability-score / IRT-style result that assigns an advanced band from one sitting.

What to study
- The advanced 7–9 syllabus band — tasks, topics, vocabulary, characters, and grammar — not a recycled HSK 6 list.
- Translation both ways, spoken and written. This is a designed part of the advanced exam.
- Long-form academic and formal Chinese: papers, news analysis, professional documents.
- A realistic 210-minute stamina plan. This is a different day from HSK 6.
Recommended timeline
Plan in years after HSK 6, unless you already live in advanced Chinese (degree work, professional use). There is no honest 12-week 7–9 sprint from a fresh HSK 6 pass.
How people usually fail this paper
- Assuming the July 2026 syllabus date automatically changed every HSK 6 sitting into this exam. It did not.
- Preparing only with HSK 6 mocks. The skill mix is broader.
- Inventing a 60% pass line and studying to that fiction.

Do I pick HSK 7, 8, or 9 when I register?+
You register for the combined advanced exam. The awarded level comes from the result, not from choosing a paper the way you choose HSK 4 vs HSK 5.
Is HSK 7–9 already available?+
Yes. The combined advanced internet-based exam has been running while HSK 1–6 continue, in many places, on the classic six-level papers. Check the current CTI calendar.
