What to study
- The official HSK 1 word list for the version you will sit — recognition and production, not only flashcards.
- Pinyin and tones until they are automatic. HSK 1 still prints pinyin, but listening does not.
- Short spoken dialogues: greetings, family, food, time, and asking where something is.
- A 15-minute diagnostic so you know whether you are still learning the alphabet of the exam or ready to book.
Recommended timeline
From zero, many adults reach a passable HSK 1 in about 1–3 months at 30–45 minutes a day (roughly 80–150 hours). Faster is possible with classes; slower is normal if you are squeezing study into a job.
How people usually fail this paper
- Knowing words on a list but missing them in speech because tones and connected audio were never trained.
- Confusing similar-looking characters even when pinyin is printed nearby.
- Booking too early after a week of cramming. HSK 1 is short; that does not make it free.
Free practice
- Placement diagnostic— unofficial band check, 20 items.
- Mini mock for HSK 1 — next on the build list.
- Interactive vocab list for this level — next, from a versioned data file.
FAQ
Is HSK 1 worth taking?+
Yes if you want a first official checkpoint, a school placement, or a deadline. Skip it if you already read simple dialogues comfortably — sit a diagnostic and consider HSK 2.
Does HSK 1 include writing?+
The current widely used HSK 2.0 written paper is listening and reading only. The 2025 HSK 3.0 syllabus adds handwriting character targets even at the first band. Confirm which paper your center is running.
Should I study the 150-word list or the 300-word list?+
Study the list that matches the exam version on your registration. If you have no date yet, the 3.0 list is a better long-term target; just do not mix lists inside one practice set.
