HSK 4: Exam Format, Vocabulary, and How to Prepare (2026)

What to study

  • The full HSK 4 list, including abstract verbs that do not show up in tourist Chinese.
  • Timed reading. Forty questions in forty minutes punishes word-by-word translation.
  • Writing from pictures and scrambled words until the patterns are boring.
  • Regular full or mini mocks. HSK 4 is where people stall because they only do flashcards.
  • Graded input at this level so the words become automatic in context.

Recommended timeline

From a solid HSK 3, plan 4–9 months of serious study. The list size roughly doubles; so should your weekly reading minutes. Working professionals often need closer to the long end of that range.

How people usually fail this paper

  • The classic stall: vocabulary looks “known” in Anki and disappears in reading passages.
  • Listening that is fine in slow lessons and collapses at exam speed.
  • Treating 180/300 as a goal instead of building a margin. A 181 pass is a fragile pass.

FAQ

How long from HSK 3 to HSK 4?+

Often 4–9 months if HSK 3 was real (not a lucky pass). If you scraped 180, budget more time — you are still finishing HSK 3.

Is HSK 4 conversational fluency?+

No. It is a strong intermediate exam. Many people who pass still struggle with native TV, slang, and unplanned conversation. Treat the certificate as a checkpoint, not a personality.
