HSK 6: Exam Format, Vocabulary, and How to Prepare (2026)

HSK 6 is the top of the classic six-level written exam. It tests long listening, dense reading, and a condensed written summary. Passing it is not the same as native-like literacy.

What you can do at this level

Follow long spoken passages and written arguments on a wide range of topics. Understand most general media with effort. Condense a passage into a shorter written text on the 2.0 paper.

What to study

  • Extensive reading: news, essays, longer graded and native texts. The 5,000-word list is a floor, not a ceiling.
  • Summary writing. The classic task is to read a passage and rewrite it shorter in your own Chinese. That is a skill, not a vocabulary problem.
  • Listening at natural speed with notes. Fifty items is a concentration exam as much as a language exam.
  • If you are aiming past this paper, start looking at the HSK 7–9 combined advanced exam rather than collecting another 2.0 mock.

Recommended timeline

From HSK 5, a year or more of part-time study is common. People who already work or study in Chinese can move faster. People who only do flashcards often never quite arrive.

How people usually fail this paper

  • Confusing “I passed HSK 6” with “I can do academic or professional Chinese.” Those are different claims.
  • Never practicing the summary task until exam week.
  • Ignoring 3.0 / 7–9 if your real goal is advanced work — HSK 6 is not the end of the official ladder anymore.

FAQ

Is HSK 6 equal to C2?+

CTI has published a CEFR comparison for the six-level exam, but treat it as a rough official mapping, not a promise that an HSK 6 pass equals a C2 user in every skill. Many HSK 6 holders are stronger at reading than speaking.
