What to study
- Characters without pinyin. If you still need ruby text to read a dialogue, you are not ready for this paper.
- The writing tasks that actually appear: arranging words, completing sentences. Practice those formats, not only essays.
- Listening for key details (time, place, who, why) rather than translating the whole audio.
- A first timed mock around week 4 of a study block, then another near the exam.
Recommended timeline
From a comfortable HSK 2, 2–4 months is typical. From zero, often 6–10 months. Writing is short but new; budget time to produce characters, not only recognize them.
How people usually fail this paper
- Arriving as a “pinyin-only” learner and running out of time in reading.
- Ignoring writing because it is only 15 minutes — then giving away easy points.
- Memorizing 600 words and never sitting a clocked paper.
Free practice
