HSK reading

On most levels of the new HSK you have about one minute per reading question. That leaves no time to translate every word. This guide covers each question type, how to manage the time, and how to train for speed.

The question types

Matching sentences to pictures (HSK 1–2)

Find the one concrete word that a picture could show: 唱歌, 下雨, 鸡蛋, 游泳. Match the easy ones first; the last pictures go by elimination.

Matching questions and replies (HSK 1–3)

You match each line to the reply that fits. Use the question word (谁, 怎么, 多少钱) and the topic. If a line is about a 裙子, its reply is about clothes. Read the reply options once before you start, so you know what is available.

Word banks (HSK 1–4)

Choose words from a bank to fill gaps. Before looking at the bank, decide what kind of word the gap needs:

  • After a number: a measure word (三(封)信, 一(双)鞋).
  • Before a noun: an adjective or 的-phrase.
  • After a subject, before an object: a verb.
  • At the start of a clause: a linking word (因为, 但是, 不过, 而且).

At HSK 4, each bank has one extra word that fits nowhere. Fill the gaps you are sure of first, then use elimination for the rest.

Short passages with a ★ question (HSK 1–4)

Read the ★ question first, then find the sentence that answers it. The correct choice usually says the same thing in different words: 花特别多 for 到处都开着漂亮的花. Choices that copy words from the passage but change the meaning are common traps.

Sentence gaps in a passage (HSK 4, 6)

Choose the sentence that fits each gap. Check the joins: does the gap need a subject? Does the next clause start with 才, 也 or 却, which need something specific before them? Pronouns like 他 and 这 in a choice must refer to something before the gap. At HSK 6 one sentence is a distractor.

Cloze passages (HSK 5–6)

Choices are close in meaning: 创造, 反映, 建设, 表达. Decide by what the word combines with (反映…水平, 占有…地位) and by formality. Reading the whole sentence, including what comes after the gap, matters more than knowing an English translation.

Paragraph ordering (HSK 5, 7–9)

Put five paragraphs in order. Find the opening first: it introduces a person or topic by name, without 他, 这 or 此外. Then follow time words (后来, 一天, 最后), connectors and repeated nouns. Check the end: the last paragraph often sums up or gives a result.

Long passages (HSK 5–9)

Each passage has three or four questions. Skim the first sentence of each paragraph to map the text, read the questions, then read the parts you need. Title questions (最适合做上文题目的是) and main-idea questions need the whole passage, so answer them last.

Managing time

  • Know your pace. About one question a minute at HSK 1–6. Check the clock at the halfway point.
  • Don’t get stuck. Mark a guess, note the number, and come back if time allows. Every question has the same weight.
  • Answer everything. The HSK has not taken marks off for wrong answers, so a guess is better than a blank.
  • Paper test: the new sample papers give answer-sheet time only after listening, so mark the answer sheet as you go during reading.

Reading without pinyin

From HSK 3 there is no pinyin on the paper. If you still rely on it, start now: read graded texts in characters only, and look up pinyin only after you have tried. Learning characters through common components (氵, 扌, 讠, 口) helps you guess and remember new ones. See characters by level.

Training for speed

  1. Read a lot of easy text. Graded readers and stories slightly below your level, every day. Speed comes from volume.
  2. Timed sets. Ten reading questions with a ten-minute timer, two or three times a week.
  3. Review your mistakes. Was it vocabulary, grammar, a trap choice, or time? Each needs a different fix.
  4. Learn words in context. If a word you “know” keeps tripping you in passages, learn it in two or three example sentences.
