HSK 1 grammar is the foundation: basic sentence order, 是 and 有, negation with 不 and 没, questions with 吗 and question words, measure words, and the first uses of 了. Almost every sentence on the HSK 1 test uses several of these points.

How to study grammar for the HSK
- Learn patterns, not rules. Memorise one or two example sentences for each point. They are easier to recall than an explanation.
- Listen to the examples. Grammar words like 了, 的 and 得 are short and unstressed; you need to hear them.
- Notice them in reading. When you meet a pattern in a text, check the grammar page and read the examples again.
- Use them in writing. From HSK 3, the writing section asks for your own sentences. Each pattern you can use correctly is a safe sentence on the test.
