The old teahouse

A granddaughter decides what to do with her grandfather’s teahouse.

On an old street in the city there is a teahouse that has been open for over forty years. It’s small, with only eight tables, and a few yellowed pieces of calligraphy hang on the walls. Grandpa Wang opened it himself when he was young.

Měi tiān zǎoshang liù diǎn, Wáng yéye dōu huì zhǔnshí kāi mén, shāo shuǐ, zhǔnbèi chá jù. Lái hē chá de dà duō shì fùjìn de lǎorén, tāmen yí zuò jiùshì yí shàngwǔ, liáo tiān, xià qí, kàn bàozhǐ, hǎoxiàng shíjiān zài zhèlǐ guò de tèbié màn.

At six every morning Grandpa Wang opens up, boils water and sets out the tea things. Most customers are older people from the neighbourhood. Once they sit down they stay all morning, chatting, playing chess and reading the paper, as if time passes more slowly here.

Qiánnián, Wáng yéye de shēntǐ yuè lái yuè chà, jiā lǐ rén dōu quàn tā bǎ chá guǎn guān le. Tā de Sūn nǚ xiǎo yǔ gāng cóng dàxué bìyè, běn lái dǎsuàn qù dà chéngshì zhǎo gōngzuò, kěshì kàn zhe yéye shěbude de yàngzi, tā yóuyù le.

Two years ago, Grandpa Wang’s health was getting worse, and the family urged him to close the teahouse. His granddaughter Xiaoyu had just graduated from university and planned to look for work in a big city, but seeing how much her grandfather hated to let it go, she hesitated.

In the end Xiaoyu decided to stay and take over the teahouse. She kept its old look but made some changes: she added a few teas young people like, and ran tea classes at weekends. Gradually, along with the older regulars, quite a few young people started coming too.

Wáng yéye xiànzài búyòng měi tiān gōngzuò le, dàn tā háishi xǐhuan zuò zài ménkǒu de lǎo wèizhì, kàn zhe lái lái wǎngwǎng de kèrén. Tā cháng shuō:"chá guǎn hái zài, lǎo jiē jiù hái yǒu wèidào."

Grandpa Wang no longer has to work every day, but he still likes to sit in his old spot by the door, watching the customers come and go. He often says, “As long as the teahouse is here, the old street still has its flavour.”
