The corner bookshop

How a small bookshop survives next to the internet.

Zhè jǐ nián, wǎngshang mǎi shū yuè lái yuè fāngbiàn, jiàgé yě piányi, hěn duō jiē shàng de shūdiàn dōu guān mén le. Kěshì zài wǒ jiā fùjìn de jiē jiǎo, yǒu yì jiā xiǎo shūdiàn búdàn méiyǒu guān mén, shēngyi fǎn’ér yuè lái yuè hǎo.

In recent years buying books online has become more and more convenient and cheap, and many high-street bookshops have closed. But on the street corner near my home, there’s a small bookshop that hasn’t closed. In fact its business keeps getting better.

Shūdiàn de lǎobǎn xìng Chén, sì shí suì zuǒyòu, yǐqián shì yì míng chūbǎn shè de biānjí. Tā shuō, gēn wǎngshang shūdiàn bǐ jiàgé, xiǎo shūdiàn kěndìng bǐ búguò, suǒyǐ tā yào zuò de, shì tígōng wǎngshang méiyǒu de dōngxi.

The owner, Mr Chen, is about forty and used to be an editor at a publisher. He says a small shop can’t compete with online stores on price, so what he has to do is offer things you can’t get online.

Měi běn shū de pángbiān, Chén lǎobǎn dōu huì fàng yì Zhāng kǎpiàn, xiě shàng zìjǐ de dú hòu gǎn hé tuījiàn lǐyóu. Měi gè yuè, tā hái huì yāoqǐng zuòzhě lái diàn lǐ gēn dúzhě jiāoliú. Diàn lǐ yǒu yí gè jiǎoluò zhuānmén liú gěi háizi, zhōumò jīngcháng yǒu fùmǔ dài zhe háizi lái zhèlǐ dú huì běn.

Next to each book, Mr Chen puts a card with his own thoughts on it and why he recommends it. Every month he invites an author to meet readers in the shop. There’s a corner kept just for children, and at weekends parents often bring their kids to read picture books.

Someone asked him whether this made money. Mr Chen smiled and said, “Not much, but enough. For me, what matters most is that people find a good book here and meet a few friends who love reading.”
