和: and, with
和 joins nouns (我和你). It doesn’t join two sentences or two verbs.
Structure
- Noun + 和 + noun
- A + 和 + B + 一起 + verb
How it works
和 joins nouns and pronouns: 爸爸和妈妈, 苹果和米饭.
It also means “with”: 我和朋友去看电影 = I’m going to see a film with a friend.
Unlike English “and”, 和 doesn’t join two sentences or two actions. For “I went shopping and bought…”, just put the actions one after the other.

Wǒ hé wǒ māma qù shāngdiàn.
My mum and I are going to the shop.

Wǒ xǐhuan píngguǒ hé mǐfàn.
I like apples and rice.

Common mistakes

和 doesn’t join verbs; put the actions in order.

Two descriptions are joined with 也, not 和.
