都 and 也: all, also

都 (all) and 也 (also) go before the verb, never at the start or end of the sentence.

Structure

  • Subject + 也 + verb
  • Plural subject + 都 + verb
  • Subject + 也都 + verb

How it works

也 means “also” and goes after the subject, before the verb: 我也喜欢茶. It never goes at the end like English “too”.

都 means “all, both” and refers back to a plural subject: 我们都是学生. It also goes before the verb.

When both are used, the order is 也都: 他们也都去.
