Stuck at a level?

Many learners move quickly through HSK 1–3 and then stall. It usually isn’t a lack of effort. The study habits that work for 1,000 words stop working at 2,000 and beyond, and the test starts measuring speed as well as knowledge.

Why it happens

The word lists grow fast: 1,000 words at HSK 3, 2,000 at HSK 4 and 3,600 at HSK 5. Each step is bigger than everything you learned before it. At the same time, the words become less concrete. HSK 1–3 words are things you can picture: 苹果, 火车, 下雨. HSK 4 and 5 words are ideas: 态度, 影响, 原则, 观点. They are harder to remember on flashcards because there is no image to hang them on.

The test changes too:

  • Texts get longer. At HSK 4, reading includes whole passages with gaps; at HSK 5, long articles with several questions each. Knowing the words is not enough if you read slowly.
  • Listening gets faster and longer. Recordings move from short exchanges to talks and interviews at close to natural speed.
  • Writing becomes essays. HSK 4 ends with an 80-character essay and HSK 5 has two essays. Many learners leave writing until the last few weeks.

Which problem do you have?

Take the practice test for your target level in exam mode, then look at where the points went.

  • You knew the words but ran out of time in reading. This is the most common pattern at HSK 4–5. The fix is more easy reading, not more words. See the four-week reset below.
  • You recognised words when reading but not when listening. You have learned words by sight. Switch the vocabulary quiz to listening mode and listen to every new word before you see it.
  • You kept meeting words you didn’t know. Then words really are the gap. Paste a reading passage into the text level checker: if coverage at your level is below 95%, keep working on the list.
  • Writing scored far below the rest. You need regular short writing practice, starting now rather than in the last month.
  • Your flashcard reviews say you know the words, but you don’t in context. Cards test recognition of a word on its own. Learn new words in a phrase (提高水平, 产生影响) and meet them in reading.

A balanced week

Below HSK 3, most study time can go on words and grammar. From HSK 3 on, shift the balance towards reading and listening. A rough split for a 45-minute weekday:

  • 15 minutes: new words and review, in phrases, with audio.
  • 20 minutes: reading or listening at an easy level, without stopping.
  • 10 minutes: one of a grammar point, a short timed section, or a few sentences of writing.

At the weekend, do one longer timed section and go through your mistake list. The same day matters: you remember why you chose an answer.

A four-week reset

Week 1: easy volume

Stop adding new words for a week. Read only material that feels easy, at least 20 minutes a day: the stories one level below yours, or graded readers. Time one page at the start of the week and again at the end.

Week 2: listening at test speed

Listen to the practice test recordings and stories for your level every day. Play each recording once, write down the key information, then play it again with the text. Notice which words you knew on paper but missed by ear.

Week 3: words in context

Go back to new words at a lower rate, about half what you were doing, and learn each in a phrase from the grammar examples or stories. Write one sentence of your own for every new word.

Week 4: writing and a timed test

Write two short texts from the writing practice page and compare them with the samples. At the end of the week, take the practice test in exam mode again and compare section by section with your first attempt.

How long from HSK 3 to HSK 4?

HSK 4 adds 1,000 words, as many as HSK 1–3 together. Our estimate is 180–300 hours of study, which at an hour a day is roughly six to ten months. Learners who read every day tend to reach the short end. The HSK 4 plan spreads the work over 26 weeks at 60–90 minutes a day.

Should you take the test anyway?

If you need the certificate by a date, take the level you are ready for now and go up later; a pass at HSK 4 is more useful than a fail at HSK 5. If you don’t need it by a date, taking the test can still help: a booked test makes the last few months of study much more focused. See retaking the HSK for what happens if it doesn’t go well.
