Retaking the HSK and choosing your level
You can take the HSK as many times as you like, and you can register for any level without passing the ones below it. Each test is a new registration and a new score report. Many people retake the HSK, and a clear plan for the weakest section usually makes the difference.
Skipping levels
There is no rule that you must take HSK 1 before HSK 2, or pass HSK 3 before HSK 4. Choose the level that matches your goal and your current ability. A good test: do a full practice test at the level you are considering. If you finish the reading in time and score comfortably above 60%, that level is realistic.
Skipping works best when a placement or practice test confirms it. It tends to go wrong when the words look familiar on flashcards but listening and reading speed have not caught up, especially at HSK 3, where pinyin disappears, and HSK 4, where the word list doubles.
If you did not pass
Start with your score report. It shows a score for each section, and that tells you where to spend your time. Re-reading the whole word list at the same speed rarely fixes the problem. Find the weakest section and work on it first.
If listening was the problem
You knew the words when you read them later, but missed them in the audio.
- Listen to short level-appropriate recordings daily, first for the gist, then for details, before reading the script.
- Practise the exact question types: read the answer choices before the audio plays and predict what to listen for.
- Shadow: repeat short sentences aloud right after the recording. It trains your ear to the speed of the test.
If reading was the problem
You ran out of time, or understood each word but not the passage.
- Read every day at or slightly below your level, without pinyin or a dictionary on the first pass.
- Time yourself: one question per minute is the pace of most HSK reading sections.
- Learn new words in sentences, so you recognise them in context and not only on flashcards.
If writing was the problem
You left answers blank, wrote too little, or made many character mistakes.
- Practise the task types for your level until the format is automatic: missing characters, sentences with a given word, essays of the required length.
- Write a short paragraph three times a week, by hand if you take the paper test, and check it against model answers.
- Keep a list of characters you get wrong and write each one from memory every day for a week.
If speaking was the problem
You ran out of things to say, or paused for long stretches.
- Record yourself answering practice questions with the real preparation and answer times.
- Prepare a few flexible openings and structures: your view, a reason, an example, a conclusion.
- Retell short recordings in your own words; at HSK 4–6 this is a scored task.
When to book the retake
- Close miss (within about 5% of the pass mark): 4–8 weeks of focused work on the weak section is often enough.
- One section far below the others: 2–3 months on that skill, with a full practice test every few weeks.
- Two or more sections well below: follow a full study plan for the level before booking again.
Leave enough time for registration: about four weeks before a paper-based test and ten days before a computer-based one. See test dates.
Retaking after the new HSK starts
If your first test was the old format and your retake is on or after 13 December 2026, you will take the new HSK. The word list is larger and the question types are different, so plan extra time and use new-format practice. The old vs new word list comparison shows which words to add.
Questions
How many times can I take the HSK? +
CTI does not publish a limit. Each test is a new registration and a new score report.
Do I have to pass HSK 3 before taking HSK 4? +
No. You can register for any level without having taken the levels below it.
If I pass HSK 4, do I also get HSK 3? +
No. You receive a report for the level you took. If a school asks for HSK 3, an HSK 4 pass usually satisfies it, but check with them.
Should I retake the same level or go down one? +
If your total was close to the pass mark, retake the same level after targeted work on the weakest section. If two or more sections were far below, consider the level below first, or plan a longer study block before retaking.
