了 at the end: a new situation

了 at the end of a sentence shows a change: 下雨了 = it’s started raining.

Structure

  • Sentence + 了

How it works

了 at the end of a sentence says that something is new or has changed: 下雨了 it’s raining now (it wasn’t before), 我饿了 I’m hungry now.

With 不 it shows a change of plan: 我不去了 = I’m not going any more.

It is also used with 太…了 for “so…!” and with ages and times: 我女儿八岁了.
