HSK vocabulary quiz

Choose a level and a question type, and you get a quick round of questions from the official 2025 HSK word list. Words you miss are saved in this browser, so the next round can focus on them.

What the quiz covers

Each level uses only the words that are new at that level in the 2025 syllabus, so HSK 3 tests the 500 words added at HSK 3, not the HSK 1–2 words again. To review everything up to a level, do a round at each level below it. The full lists, with export to CSV and Anki, are on the vocabulary pages.

The four question types

  • Chinese → English checks that you recognise the word when you read it. This is the skill the reading section needs most.
  • English → Chinese is harder. You have to pick out the right characters from words that look similar, which also helps with the writing tasks.
  • Listening plays the word and asks for its characters. It is the closest match to the listening section, where you never see the word written. Audio is available for HSK 1–4.
  • Pinyin and tones asks for the right pronunciation. The wrong answers often have the same number of syllables, so you have to know the tones as well as the letters.

The wrong answers are chosen from words with the same number of characters and, where possible, the same part of speech, so you cannot guess from the length.

How to use it with your study

  1. Learn a batch of 15–20 new words from the list, with their example words and audio.
  2. The next day, do a round in “Chinese → English” and then in “Listening”.
  3. At the end of the week, tick “Only words I missed” and repeat until the saved list is empty.
  4. Mark words you are sure of as known. Rounds then skip them, and the word list pages can hide them too.

Recognising a word in a quiz is the first step. To keep it, meet it again in sentences: the grammar points and the practice tests use the same word lists. For tone accuracy, try the tone drill.

Where your results are kept

Missed words and “known” marks are stored only in this browser. Clearing site data or using a different device starts afresh. Your review page lists every saved word and lets you download them as a CSV file.
